Sassy Lawyer's Missing Files

{Sassy Lawyer logo by Jonas Diego}

On the 2nd half of December 2005, one of the Philippines most respected blog, Sassy Lawyer (houseonahill.net), ceased to exist. Connie Veneracion, the woman behind Sassy Lawyer, broke one of the cardinal rules of system administrators and modern novelists: Backup Before Tinkering. In a series of human and device errors, she single-handedly brought down her three years of recorded sweat, blood, and tears.

I can only imagine the anguish that she felt at that moment in time .

As for those who doubt the collective power of blogging, they need to look no further at the case of Sassy Lawyer. The camaraderie of the blogging community she fostered and nurtured throughout the years responded when she cried for help.

Through the sheer hard work of Yuga (Connie's partner at Pinoyblog), Karen, and Rick Ellis, Sassy Lawyer, after just ten days, like a looming phoenix, rose from its ashes during the New Year of 2006.

But like any reincarnation, feathers are ruffled and left behind. When the dust cleared, Sassy's three months archives between August 17, 2005 and December 17, 2005 proved to be harder to revive than the souls in Dante's Purgatorio.

Unfortunately, a linked at my Prostitution: to Legalize article, points out to Sassy's missing October archives. So rolling up my sleeves, I've decided to search a cache of it. One article search led to another, until not knowing it, I've drifted into the haze of the web surfing sea.

After more than two hours of browsing, listed herein are the titles of Sassy Lawyer's missing files:

And, yes I did find out what I've originally seek : Headlines you won't see in local papers ( 4 Pages: 1, 2, 3, 4). Not only that, but I found out that this is a rehash of the same topic she wrote a year before (Legitimation of prostitution is the trend Tuesday, January 20, 2004 • Prostitutes are not always victims Friday, August 13, 2004). Such is Sassy Lawyer's conviction that even with the passing years, her belief endured the test of unwavering time.

Here's wishing that she would watch Episode 56 of the fourth season of Sex and the City:

My Motherboard, My Self

Newspaper columnist Carrie Bradshaw's laptop crashed (contained within are her past, present, and future columns).

"How often do you back up?" said Adrianne, her boyfriend.

"Back up?" she replied.

Update January 7, 2005:

Last January 4, I've saved a few full post articles. I didn't have enough time to include it then. Here it is, in downloadable form:

  1. August (1)

  2. September (6)

  3. October (7)

  4. November (46)

  5. December (27)

  6. Comments

There are more than a hundred articles in the original download. I've trimmed it to 87, weeding out all of the pre-existing articles at Sassy's new blog, to avoid duplicates.

Thank you. So very much. Words will never suffice to relay my gratitude. I appreciate the time and effort you put into searching for the files.

    Thank you.

You truly are heaven sent. I suppose what happened to Sassy has been every blogger's nightmare.

    Sassy,

    You're welcome.

One more thing though: I do hope you save it all, before the search engines caches the non-existent page.

Save whatever you can. But do not skip a sleep over those that you can't.

    To all,

Thank you. Now onwards to a New Year of fresh write-ups and fresher backups.

    tracking back...
Recently, however, Basangpanaginip came up with bits and pieces—in some cases, entire posts with comments—of the missing posts by searching Yahoo! and MSN and linking to the cached pages.

Hi, kindly try the "WayBackMachine" of Internet Archive.

    Anonymous (07 January, 2006 23:42)

Whoa! I have absolutely NO idea how you did this (no really -- I have no idea because I'm technologically clueless that way), but I'm really impressed! That was so wonderful of you to do that for Sassy.

PS: I have no idea of how to backup. Or even if I need to. Seriously. But I'll remember to contact you the day I find out I needed to but didn't.

    vonjobi,

Thank you for mentioning me in your blog.

Gigablast, even if it's still in beta, is a great tool.

In fact it's the first search engine I've used for finding Sassy's files.

It uses the same hash as Google, and produce an almost identical cache with Yahoo (which is in itself was based on Google).

    Jun Armirola,

I remembered the year when Waybackmachine first launched, it was deemed by many, to be the next big thing.

    Then Google happened.

WayBackMachine is good for year-old archives of well-known sites, but unreliable when it comes lesser known sites.

You will almost always hit zero, when seeking newer cache (See for yourself: Sassy's Archives).

    Gigi,

Thank you for visiting my blog.

A simple, albeit inefficient, and time-consuming backup solution: copy and paste your favorite article in a word processor. Save.

An easier option is to export all your Typepad posts.

    Wow! That was way cool...

Anyway, I tried Gigablast to search for the archives of my already dead blog... and VOILA! I found them! Wow... I really need the codes from my past layouts to make a new one... Now I have them! Thanks to you in a way because you mentioned Gigablast as a great tool to search for archives! You are soooo cool!

Wow, this is so humane of you. To help someone in need without any monetary benefits is very cool indeed.

You're more than cool, you're an unsung hero material.

My officemates and I, are avid reader of your stories. We're still waiting for the next parts, when?
