Craig Newmark started Craigslist in 1995 for the San Francisco Bay Area residence. In 1999, after incorporating itself as a for profit company, Craigslist extended it's service to 9 U.S. cities a year after, and added more than a dozen more in the succeeding years. Today, Craigslist has listings in more than 400 cities across 50 countries.



How do they make money at Craigslist? Well, like Wikipedia, Craigslist has a small overhead, with a staff consisting of only two dozen or so people. The main source of revenue for Craigslist is paid job ads in few cities. For example, posting a job ad in San Francisco Bay Area cost around $75, while the cost is around a third of that with for New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, Boston, Seattle, Washington D.C., and Chicago, which cost around $25. On the other hand, placing ads for an apartment in New York City cost around $10 per ad.



Craigslist is among the most visited website in the world, with over 5 billion page views per month. The site serve over over 10 million new classified ads each month. Craigslist is not only a leader in classifieds, they are also among the top job job sites in the world. Craiglists classifieds is various from buying and selling ads, to personal ads, to even those catering to adults.
